About This Project

I interviewed novelist John Wray about Gone to the Wolves, his latest novel. It’s a fascinating glimpse of the early death metal scene in Florida as seen through the eyes of three teenagers. Wray had lots of insights about music, fiction, and more.

I loved this quote in particular:

You get this creeping impression that the author . . . is trying to be cooler than he is by writing a novel about something that’s obviously cool. . . . Sure, you can try to inhabit the mind of Jimmy Page, but that doesn’t make you Jimmy Page.
